The FIU Style Guide is the university’s official term reference for all FIU websites and communicators. The style guide helps create consistent, easy-to-read and grammatically correct content that reflects our brand and voice.
The FIU style guide adheres to and expands upon the Associated Press Stylebook (AP style), the standard writing and editing resource for newsrooms, classrooms and corporate offices worldwide.
Using the Style Guide
Treat the FIU Style Guide like an FIU dictionary. Refer to it when you’re unsure about an FIU term's spelling or correct punctuation.
Topics are covered in the style guide for one of the following reasons:
- It is not addressed in the AP Stylebook.
- FIU's style around the subject differs from the standard AP style.
- The topic arises frequently and has specific resonance for readers of FIU's materials.
Just as the AP regularly updates its stylebook, we make changes to meet the needs of our writers and readers. If a topic is not addressed in the style guide, defer to the AP stylebook. If you still have a question about a topic or term, please email Alexandra Pecharich, director of news communications in the Division of Strategic Communications, Government and External Affairs.
