Choosing the Right Event Type for your FIU Calendar Event

Event Types are the categories that appear on event cards in the FIU Calendar. Only one type of event can appear on your event listing, so it's important to pick the right Event Type when creating your event.

The FIU Calendar is an important tool for announcing upcoming events at the university, but you have to make sure you're applying the right Event Type so users can find your event and understand what to expect.

FIU Calendar event cards

All events appear on the calendar as event cards. The screenshot above shows four events with appropriate Event Types selected.

The event type on an FIU event card

The Event Type in the top-left corner lets users quickly understand what kind of event they will be attending.

The navigation tab on FIU Calendar

It also categorizes your event into its appropriate group, so users can find it by clicking through the FIU Calendar navigation.

Recently, however, we've noticed a few events that were labeled generically, with the wrong Event Type or without any Event Type at all.

Don't worry! No one is being called out. We just want to make sure events are being communicated effectively and accurately to our fellow Panthers.

Event Types

We thought it'd be helpful to go over the different event types so you can make sure your own events are properly categorized.

Listing cards only show one Event Type, so try to pick the one that is most relevant to your event.

Academic Calendar

This should only be used for events and deadlines related to the academic calendar, like add/drop deadlines, dates for finals week or when grades are posted.

Admissions

This should be used for large-scale admissions events, such as an open house, as well as general admission deadlines.

Alumni

This should be used for events like a tailgate or a gala where alumni are expected to be a major part of the audience. A common error to avoid is marking your event with Alumni just because an alumnus is featured or present at the event. The event in question must be for alumni specifically to be tagged as such.

Arts & Culture

This is meant for exhibitions, readings or performances presented or hosted by FIU, or featuring FIU students and faculty. This event label has several sub-types:

  • Exhibitions
  • Literature & Poetry
  • Music
  • Performing arts

Campus Life

This type refers to student events held on campus. Common examples include events hosted by clubs or Greek organizations.

Career Readiness

This type is for events featuring resources for career readiness or professional development.

Community

Community events focus more on external outreach and are usually open to the broader FIU community.

Faculty & Staff

As the name suggests, these are for events geared primarily toward faculty & staff, like training events or professional development workshops.

Unlike events in the Workshops & Webinars type, Faculty & Staff events are not intended for students.

Info Sessions

Info Sessions refer to scheduled events for learning more about FIU programs, usually aimed at students and prospective students.

Lectures & Conferences

This type can sometimes be confused with Workshops & Webinars. The main difference is that these are more academic in subject matter, with the featured presenter focusing on a specific topic rather than improving a skill.

Recreation & Wellness

These are meant to describe campus-related events about getting active and encouraging physical fitness.

Workshops & Webinars

This type can sometimes be confused with Lectures & Conferences. The main difference is that Lectures & Conferences focus on more academic subjects, while Workshops & Webinars focus on skill improvement or professional development.
