In today’s digital era, it's important to understand how your website visitors behave so you can make informed decisions to optimize your website. One tool that can help with this task is Google Analytics. In this post, I’ll briefly explain what Google Analytics is, why it is important, and the role our team at Digital Communications plays to help the university leverage its potential.
What is Google Analytics?
Google Analytics is a free tool offered by Google that lets you track website traffic and user behaviors. It provides a lot of valuable insights from user interactions that can help organizations better understand how visitors engage with their websites, apps and other digital content.
Some of the key benefits include:
- User Behavior Analysis: Track how users navigate through your site, which pages they visit and how much time they spend on each.
- Audience Demographics: Gain insights into the demographics and interests of your website visitors.
- Conversion Tracking: Measure the success of specific goals or actions on your site such as form submissions.
- Custom Reports: Tailor reports to focus on metrics that matter most to your department.
Our Role
As one of the web teams responsible for creating and launching websites at the university, we know the importance of data-driven decision-making. Therefore, when we launch a website, we always set up a Google Analytics 4 property if the department does not already have one set up.
Our team can help with basic questions and access requests, but we recommend checking out LinkedIn Learning courses (included for free with your FIU Account) and other online resources for more advanced data analysis questions.
Becoming proficient in Google Analytics provides a range of insights that contributes to the overall success of FIU.
Requesting Access
To request access to your site(s) in Google Analytics, all you have to do is send an email to digimaint@fiu.edu letting us know which sites you need access to (include your supervisor in the email if needed).
You will also need to share your Google Account email with us. We will request that you create a Google Account using your current FIU email. The instructions to do so can be found under “Use an existing email address” on Google Support. Gmail accounts will not be accepted.
