What is the DRC?
The DRC is the university’s go-to resource for disability services. We offer students help with accommodations, academic coaching tailored to their needs and connections to other campus resources. We work closely with faculty and staff to create a learning environment, including the web, that supports every student.
What is web accessibility?
Web accessibility means designing and building websites that are usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. It’s about removing obstacles that could stop people from accessing information or features on the web.
To be considered accessible, your website should meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), widely recognized as the standard for building accessible websites.
Web accessibility covers all types of disabilities that can affect how someone uses the web, including:
- Hearing
- Cognitive
- Neurological
- Physical
- Speech
- Vision
Making your website accessible ensures everyone can navigate it and get the information they need.
How to make your site accessible
Here are some quick and easy ways to make your site more accessible. These simple steps can help improve the experience for all users
Use clear headings
Headings serve a much bigger purpose than making text stand out. They help organize information on web pages and keep paragraphs short and easy to read.

Use simple language
Write clearly and avoid using complicated words or technical jargon to help users understand your content easily.
Read about the five steps for writing better content.
Add alt text to images
Describe images clearly so screen readers can explain them to users with vision impairments. When using an image as a clickable link, describe where the link is going rather than what's in the image.
Learn more about alt text in our What is alt text post.
Make links descriptive
Use clear, descriptive and unique link text, such as like Download the schedule instead of Click here.

The goal of web accessibility is simple: to make your website usable and enjoyable for more people. When you follow accessibility best practices, you improve the experience for all users.
