When electing to add file upload fields to your Webforms, there are a handful of issues your users might encounter. Some of these issues can be fixed in the field options of your form while others are part of Webforms functionality.
File with double extension not allowed
Since our latest upgrade to Webforms, the system no longer allows filenames to contain multiple periods. For example, "Screenshot 2023-07-10 at 10.10.10 AM.png," a common filename pattern for Mac screenshots, has three periods in the file name and would therefore not be able to be uploaded. Attempting to upload with that filename would produce the following alert:
To fix, the user should rename their file to omit any periods other than the file extension (E.g., .doc, .pdf or .jpg).
File size limit
Each file upload field has a default 10 MB file size limit. If you want to set a custom size to guarantee you receive smaller files, you can go into the field properties and under "Upload Options," set a custom file size limit:
Limiting file types
Within the file upload field you can limit what file types are allowed to be submitted to prevent users from submitting incorrect or potentially malicious file types. Under the field property go to the section "File Types," and you'll see a default list of allowed file types. You can remove any file types from the list that you do not want submitted, make sure extensions are lowercase, do not include periods and are separated by commas:
Some quick reminders about Webforms
- Webforms is self-service. DigiComm is here to help, but we typically do not debug individual forms.
- If you're interested in creating a form and need help from the Office of Digital Communications for making your form successful, you can start a project with the DigiComm team. Make sure to describe the project in detail and select “Website – New Feature” as the service.
